Would you support an ice arena for $3 a year? Yes, that's right! $3 a year. That's all a new ice arena in the City of Big Lake would cost the average tax payer per year. Most people would say this is a steal.
No matter how you feel about an arena you have to admit that $3 per year is a great deal. A local non-profit organization, the Becker - Big Lake Ice Association, has put together a proposal to build an arena for the community. The City of Big Lake and Big Lake Township have both agreed to support a local community ice arena through tax abatement.
Why not, there is a minimal tax impact to the residents with a maximum benefit for the community. The school board is trying to determine if the investment is good for the school and will benefit the community. For each residents $3 a year investment, the school gets an ice arena to call home.
On a school night our student athletes would no longer arrive home after midnight from practice at another schools home arena. School enrollment increases due to having a more attractive community with more to offer.
You retain the students and families that are considering moving because Big Lake has no arena. Student participation also increases because of convenience and that will help lower the cost to participate. Another opportunity to succeed is made available for the kids in our community. All this for only $3 a year. If you are like me and see that this is a great deal, please let your school board know. The Big Lake School Board needs to hear from the community that Big Lake supports tax abatement for an arena.
