I wanted to take this opportunity to update you on the work we are doing on the Big Lake/Becker Ice Center. I am very excited to see this project move forward. The Big Lake/Becker Ice Center is an excellent opportunity for our youth and families to engage in sports that build leadership skills and lasting friendships. The Ice Center can also bring positive business to the surrounding area from its use.
Through the hard work of so many in our communities and within the legislature, this project has had several promising developments over the past few weeks. I am the Chief Author of S.F. 1000 which issues and appropriates bonding for the Big Lake/Becker Regional Ice Center. Feb. 26, S.F. 1000 was introduced in the Senate and referred to the Economic Development and Housing Budget Division. I am very pleased to announce the bill passed out of this committee Monday March 9.
The most exciting news of all took place March 10 in the Senate Capitol Investment Committee. This committee announced the Big Lake/Becker Ice Arena and its request for $500,000 would be included in the 2010 bonding bill. I know the process can be confusing, but believe me, this is a HUGE step for the project.
