Thirty nine volunteers attended a program at the Elk River City Hall Tuesday morning to learn basic techniques for uncovering the presence of emerald ash borer larvae, in particular increased woodpecker activity in ash trees in the early spring.

Two Big Lake gymnasts represented the Hornets at the individual state championship this year. Cassie Knick and Mallary Dick competed Saturday at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavillion after the Hornets took second place in Section 7A championships this year.

The Big Lake 14 Elite volleyball team took third place in the President’s Day Festival Tournament, which incudes 64 schools from around the state. Big Lake’s under 14's Elite volleyball team took third place at the 25th annual President's Day Festival, which was held Feb. 14-15 in schools around the Twin Cities area.

Marvin Thomas Oeffling, age 57, of Princeton, passed away on Thursday, February 26, 2015 after a brave battle with multiple system atrophy.  He was born on September 21, 1957 in Minneapolis, the son of Phillip and Lucille (Orrock) Oeffling.

Big Lake Hornets varsity gymnasts won their Tropical Twist meet with a score of 139.100 Saturday.

Geography Bee winners named

 Eighth grader Eric Voight won the Big Lake Middle School National Geography Bee last week and goes on to take the written test to participate at the state level


POETRY OUT LOUD contest winners were (front), Laurel Pietrzak, third place, Karrissa Bechtold, first place, and Jessica Stenberg, second place.
